“The List” is our exclusive series highlighting select artists and the various, random things they’re currently into and inspired by. With featured guests from all creative facets, this series shall serve as your go-to for all things visionary and artistic.

Audre Lorde – ‘The Berlin Years’

As her body weakened under the stress of cancer, Lorde’s mind appeared to sharpen with increasing urgency. All of the documentaries on Lorde are interesting but as this one speaks to a uniquely European position, it resonated with my experiences of growing up in the UK with Jamaican and British family. Whenever I am lost I can come back to her words to ground myself.

Beverly Buchanan

She is my number one. I don’t think there is an artist I feel quite as close to and moved by. Her hustle, humour, attention to the fabrics of our lives – burning her own work only to re-make, continued movement and transformation. Bad with a captial B.

Ciara – “Ride”

If I could move like this one day, I would die happy. I recently spoke about this video with my oldest friend and accomplice, Jamila Johnson-Small, as we were preparing for our own performance, Sounds 4 Survival. Discovering that it was also one of her favorites solidified its potency for me.

‘Sounds 4 Survival’

Jamila Johnson-Small

Jamila can dance like that “Ride” video & has been top of all of my lists since we met at school. Her shows are overflowing with a frenetic energy that is challenging and comforting to me in equal measure. Recent works are made under the name Last Yearz Interesting Negro.

Doyle Lane

My love for ceramics developed into a full blown obsession in the last year since I learned to throw on the pottery wheel. Discovering Lane was a turning point, seeing how he finessed the possibilities of philosophy, style, colour, and texture within the art form has been a vital influence for me.

Joan Armatrading

I was like, Sade or Joan… but I guess for the big dyke energy, Joan has to be on this list. Her voice, her vibe, her power is SO impressive. And she reminds me of my parents’ generation in London so there is a complicated, love filled nostalgia too.

Simone Rocha

10 years ago I was working in DSM Londonthe, the shop where she sold her first collection, and it has been a love story from the beginning. Ha. I would wear it daily if I could. We have bonded over admiration for the same artists and the way that she weaves those inspirations into her collections is always exciting.

I visited Tokyo for the first time this year. The care taken with even the smallest of aesthetic decisions is incredible. And the food!! And the people! I would love to spend a lot more time there.
