The band of living legends that comprise The Roots have teamed up with Amazon to do something special for today’s youth. Loved by fans across the nation for their original contributions to music and as the house band of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Grammy-winning hip hop band are reported to develop both an animated children’s series and a live-action children’s series.
According to Variety, both projects will be executive produced by The Roots’ Tarik Trotter and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, their manager Shawn Gee for Philly Films, and Brian Sher for Category 5 Entertainment. Written by Becky Friedman of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, the show South Street Sounds will follow three friends as they grow up in the most musical of neighborhoods — “where the birds tweet to a beat, every shop-keeper, pizza-maker and crossing guard dances perfectly in time, and having a bad day means literally singing the blues.”
Could this be the start of our seeing more Black culture-driven kids programs? We sure hope so.
