Syd’s Debut Solo LP ‘Fin’ Has Finally Arrived

Our countdown to Fin has officially ended. Syd‘s debut 12 track LP is finally here and it’s an absolute dream from the soft sensuality of the California native’s voice on cuts like “Know” to the more groove-laden bangers like “Dollar Bills.” Fin‘s only listed feature is from sensational R&B newcomer 6lack, but she manages to immaculately carry each head-bopping jam on her own. Personal favorites are the excruciatingly relatable “Insecurities” where Syd admits to holding on to an unhealthy relationship against her better judgement, and the trap-inspired ode to independent ladies “Got Her Own” in which she delivers mellow, lyrical praise to a woman who acquired everything she wanted by herself. She sings, “She’s out of your league/ I heard she’s a pro/ She gets her stats/ You don’t need to know…I heard she got her own” Previously released singles “Body” and “All About Me” along with the original SoundCloud loosie that gave us our first taste of Syd as a solo artist “Smile More” are all included on the album.

The Internet’s evolution since Purple Naked Ladies was enough evidence to endorse the singer-songwriter’s versatility, but tracks like “No Complaints” find her stretching out into Hip Hop as she adds her own mellifluous touch to rapped bars. And while there was no doubt that Fin would be superb from start to finish, it seems to have surpassed our out-of-this-world expectations of just how perfect it’d be.
