Stream Childish Gambino’s Soulfully Funkadelic ‘Awaken, My Love!’

The release of “Redbone” kept us on the edge of our seats for December 2nd, but the day is finally here. Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love! is finally available and it’s all the Gospel-influenced ‘70s funk/soul we could have imagined. The multi-talented creator presents a blast to the past with roaring organ riffs, knotted guitar plucks, tightened snare strikes and the occasional soul scream, each perfectly placed for a sensory experience with sound.

“Boogie Man” sounds just like high-waisted bell bottom jeans and platform shoes, while California serves up lighter, beachy/hippie vibes. The very touching “Baby Boy” is a vulnerable plea to the muse’s mother in which he insists, “Don’t take my baby boy/ Don’t take my pride and joy.” The album closes with the very inspiring “Stand Tall,” a lesson passed on to Gambino by his parents that promotes perseverance amidst hard times.

From start to finish, Awaken, My Love! beautifully entangles ageless, funkadelic sounds with classic story telling and current relevance. And since he told Billboard that the greatness of Black ‘70s classics was based in how they, “…felt like they were trying to start a revolution,” it’s clear he accomplished what he hoped to in these 11 tracks.
