Solange Stuns in Red As The Cover Star For The Newest Issue of ELLE

Solange had a banner year to close out 2016 with the release of her studio album A Seat at the Table, and it just keeps getting better through 2017. She reached No. 1 on the charts, scored a Grammy nomination for “Cranes In The Sky,” and performed at The White House prior to The Obama’s departure from the Oval Office. The album has become a staple in the self-care playlists of Black women (and men) all over for its timeliness and frank lyricism.

Recently, Solange spoke with ELLE about the groundbreaking album for their March cover story along with finding her songwriting process, growing up alongside Destiny’s Child, and more. Here you can read excerpts in full from the interview, and below get a preview of her thoughts on her masterpiece, A Seat at the Table:

I did want to create this juxtaposition, politically, of having these very hard, messy conversations but having them stylistically in a way that you can really hear me, and not the yelling, the rage,” she ruminates. “I wanted to project in my delivery what I was not achieving at all: peace and having a certain lightness and airiness that could maybe help me get closer to having more light and airiness in my life.
