Michael B. Jordan & OWN to Develop Series Inspired by Moonlight Co-writer Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Life

Oprah Winfrey’s OWN is consistently bridging cultural elements of film to deliver high-quality programming, and the network’s newest venture is no different. Tarell Alvin McCraney, executive producer and co-writer of Moonlight, is teaming up with Michael B. Jordan for a new drama series based on McCraney’s life. According to Variety, the drama follows a 14-year-old prodigy from South Florida’s projects who must choose between the streets and higher education at the end of the Obama era.

The Oprah Winfrey Network has given the untitled project a straight-to-series order. “When Tarell shared his powerful story with us there wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” Winfrey said Wednesday in a statement. “I knew this was something special that our viewers will without a doubt connect to and feel compelled to explore with us. I am honored to be working with Tarell and the rest of the producers on this project.

Similar to “Moonlight,” this year’s Oscar award winner for Best Picture, the show will take inspiration from McCraney’s own life. “I wanted to explore the pivotal steps towards adulthood and identity, the ones we take when we think or feel we have no other choice,” he said.
