Lena Waithe’s ‘The Chi’ Lands Series on Showtime

I first encountered the matchless talent that is Lena Waithe in 2014 watching Dear White People, but have always felt like we became friends as I got to know her character Denise on the Netflix original Master of None. Witty, sarcastic and always full of advice, her portrayal of Denise was perfect. So of course there’s no surprise that Waithe has finally landed her very on series on Showtime. Titled The Chi, the series will serve as a revamp of Lena’s original project announced in 2015. She’s not only the shows creator, but will also join Common, Elwood Reid and Aaron Kaplan as the executive producers of the new series.

Completely redeveloped and recasted, The Chi will take on a new director, Rick Famuyiwa (think Dope and Brown Sugar). Straight Out of Compton‘s Jason Mitchell  has been cast to enact the role of Brandon, an aspiring restaurant owner who faces the conflicts of balancing family and responsibilities while living on Chicago’s South Side. The hour-long Chi Town-set drama will give us a different and fresh perspective on the city and will surely be one to watch. Stay tuned for updates.
