Julie Dash to Direct Mid-season Premiere of OWN’s Queen Sugar

UPDATE: Ms. Julie Dash has confirmed a “NOLA location salute” to our own Solange Knowles in the October 3rd episode!

Collaborative Black Girl Magic is our favorite and since the literal dream team we never knew we needed is now a thing, we’re overjoyed. Queen Sugar, the Oprah Winfrey Network hit series developed by Ava DuVernay, has enlisted historic filmmaker Julie Dash to join its all-girl squad for a special, two-night midseason premiere airing October 3rd and 4th. Julie Dash, one of the Saint Heron team’s personal favorite directors, joined DuVernay and the gang to pick up where we last saw everyone (we can’t wait to see what’s next for Charley).

Dash’s legendary film Daughters of the Dust made her the first Black woman to have a full-length theatrical release in the US before receiving its status as a National Treasure when it was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2004. We also reverence Julie Dash’s brilliance as you’ll recall from some of our past events. So no words can express how truly excited we are to tune in and watch what two of the most stunningly talented women in film have done together.
