Janelle Monáe Awarded Honorary Doctorate from Dillard University

Janelle Monáe has a lot to brag about from her musical accomplishments to her award-winning acting abilities. Now in addition to her selfless acts of activism, the head Electric Lady in charge has another non-entertainment related achievement to add to her ever-growing list. At Dillard University’s graduation ceremony on May 13th, Monáe delivered a heartwarming speech about the inspiring hard work of her parents (who she looked up to as a child) and encouraged graduates of the HBCU to continue following in the footsteps of trailblazing pioneers like Mary Jackson (the NASA physicist whose life she had the opportunity to embody in the multi-award winning Hidden Figures film). Janelle Monáe also received an honorary doctorate from Dillard, but made sure to equip graduates with the life tools behind her own success. “No. 1, the importance of being gracious. No. 2, the importance of being proud. No. 3, the importance of choosing freedom over fear.
