Janelle Monae Charges CFDA Awards Audience to Persist in Making Change

Janelle Monae

Singer, actress, activist, label owner and Cover Girl Janelle Monae was honored at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards last night. In recognition of her contributions to the Women’s March earlier this year, Monae received the Board of Directors’ Tribute alongside Gloria Steinem and Cecile Richards. Always proudly seizing any opportunity to be a voice for our people, the recent honorary Ph.D. recipient not only slayed her look for the evening, but challenged everyone in attendance to do their part in making sure the work to end racial and social inequality gets done.

We’re all here, and we’re artists. I never wanted to be a politician because artists get to be honest,” she admitted. “We get to tell it like it is through our work… Let’s continue to speak out against the sexism, the racism, the homophobia, the Islamophobia, and all those things that are constantly trying to divide us… we must choose freedom over fear.” You can watch the Electric Lady’s charging speech below.

Congratulations, Janelle Monae. We salute and thank you for your unwavering fearlessness and shameless devotion to ensuring equality for all.
