Jamilah Gabriel Launches Monthly Subscription Box To Celebrate Black Authors

Jamilah Gabriel

Jamilah Gabriel has upped the ante with her own variation of the monthly subscription box. The librarian at Purdue University’s Black Cultural Center Library will launch a monthly subscription service to celebrate Black authors.

The idea came to fruition after she bought a similar subscription service that focused on promoting black authors for children. When she realized there wasn’t a service on the market that offered the same thing for adults, she was inspired to create Call Number. Gabriel’s goal is to highlight lesser-known writers of color. No more surfing the Internet aimlessly for Black authors only to find common names or books you have already read since Jamilah is doing all the work on subscribers’ behalf. The Call Number box is $35 per month and will be available soon through subscription marketplace Cratejoy.

She told Layfayette Journal and CourierIt can be difficult to find writers of color if you are looking for that. Beyond the most popular ones you have to work to find writers of color. The book will come to you, a new writer will come to you without you having to dig and search. I do the work.” Let’s take a moment to celebrate all this black girl magic, y’all.
