Issa Rae 2

Black Girl Magic continues to infiltrate creative industries and the Hollywood machine in giant waves. The latest of these comes in the form of news that Issa Rae will join the cast of The Hate You Give. Starring Amandla Stenberg as the 16-year-old protagonist Starr, the film is an adaption of a Black Lives Matter-inspired novel of the same name by Angela Thomas. Russel Hornsby will play the role of Starr’s father and Lamar Johnson will play her brother in the George Tillman Jr.-directed drama.

Starr is a suburban prep-school student who lives in a poverty-stricken neighborhood where she one day witnesses the police officer shooting of her unarmed best-friend Khalil (played by Algee Smith). As she navigates these two very different worlds, she finds herself engrossed in activism to effect change while balancing concern for her own Black life. Issa will play fellow activist April who, “helps Stenberg’s character find her voice and speak up,Variety reports.
