Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is Here to Take a Slice of the American Pie

It’s no secret that Black women make significantly less than our white male counterparts and July 31 hails as Black Women’s Equal Pay Day to recognize the blatant discrimination and bring the unjustness to light.  This day is not a cause for celebration but a reminder that even amidst our success and accomplishments, we are undervalued and underpaid. Black women are not only the most educated group in the U.S. but we are avid participants in the labor workforce and start businesses at rates higher than any other group–and yet, we must work nearly eight extra months to accrue similar earnings relative to a white man’s salary.

Being deprived of American prosperity due to gender, race or ethnicity is simply a crime and it’s time that we hold our institutions and leaders accountable. The disparity in wages affects individuals and family sectors alike and we stand with the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign, along with the likes of Senator Kamala Harris, Yara Shahidi, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross and Viola Davis, “to proclaim unapologetically that black women are the cornerstone of our communities, they are phenomenal, and they deserve equal pay.”
