‘Awkward Black Girl’ Creator Issa Rae’s New Comedy Gets HBO Pilot

In 2011, Issa Rae created web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl in order to insert her perspective into sitcom culture. Watching the YouTube based series felt like connecting with a new bestie as I discovered I wasn’t the only one who felt anxious over trivial social situations. Situtions like passing the same coworker numerous times in a long hallway, freestyling inner thoughts as a relaxation method, and avoiding that super nice guy who never gets the hint. Now Rae’s transmitting her online platform to television screens with her long speculated partnership with HBO.

HBO has officially made their pilot order for Rae’s new series, entitled Insecure and co-written by Larry Wilmore. The show will keep Rae’s comedic portrayal of “the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern day African-American woman” intact. Though the premiere date is not solidified, the show is speculated to premiere late 2015 or early 2016.

Check out the recap above of the web series best moments. Issa’s book The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is also due next week, February 10.
