Roll Back, Play That: Chromeo

Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo may have dance floor ready thumpers such as “Tenderoni,” “Fancy Footwork,” and recent Toro y Moi-assisted “Come Alive,” but one must not dare question their deep hip-hop influence. Following Solange’s Coachella edition playlist, childhood homies Dave-1 and P-Thugg bless this week’s “Roll Back, Play That” with superior underground rap cuts.

The collection of jams are inspired by their high school radio show, featuring tracks from Boot Camp Clik’s Black Moon and Cypress Hill, to Bahamadia and Large Professor.

When we were still in high school, we had a hip-hop radio show on Montreal’s biggest college station. Every Saturday we’d brave the cold and take the bus with a crate full of records. Songs like “Wrong Side Of Da Tracks” and some of these other often overlooked ’90s gems were the soundtracks to our teenage winters.
