Audio: N.E.R.D, “Don’t Don’t Do It!” Feat. Kendrick Lamar

N.E.R.D is back with another special delivery titled “Don’t Don’t Do It!” Beachy guitar strums play tag with Rock-influenced elements and funky drums underneath Pharrell Williams’ vocal smoothie of sobering truths. According to Pharrell, the song was inspired by video footage of Keith Lamont Scott’s murder in North Carolina. In the video, Scott’s wife can be heard shouting “Don’t do it,” before an officer of the local city police department fatally ends the 43-year-old man’s life. “Whoa Ferguson, Oh Baltimore/ Raleigh, North Carolina (Don’t ya know), They’re gonna do it anyway/ Wisconsin, Tulsa, Oklahoma/ Cleveland, Ohio/ Montgomery, Baton Rouge/ Cincinnati car/ Dayton, Ohio (Don’t ya know), They’re gonna do it anyway/ New York, New Jersey/ Phoenix, Minnesota/ South Carolina/ They’re gonna do it anyway,” he sings of these far too frequent eventualities. Williams, who is no stranger to activism, enlisted assists from fellow activists/musicians Frank Ocean (who wrote the song’s intro) and Kendrick Lamar who lends a cleverly charged verse before the song fades out with a pleading refrain.

In addition to dropping the No_One Ever Really Dies LP this coming Friday (December 15th), N.E.R.D also plans to tour as confirmed by Pharrell during an interview with Zane Lowe for the track’s premiere. Listen to N.E.R.D and Kendrick Lamar’s “Don’t Don’t Do It!” below.
