Roll Back, Play That: Ye Ali

In a refreshing alternative to the radio’s traditional R&B, Ye Ali comes as a class act. The self proclaimed “Traphouse Jodeci” continues to keep the internet buzzing with hypnotic melodies laced with emotional undertones and trap influence. As we await his forthcoming project Private Suite, the Indiana native comes through with a sentimental mix for this week’s “Roll Back, Play That.” Featuring tracks from the legendary Al Green and heavy hitters like John Mayer and John Legend, we join him in his reflection of love, heartbreak and those common feelings of discontentment.

On John Legend’s “Again”:

This song/album came out when I went through my first break up. It had me really in a bad space. I was in love, and I messed up. I watched it crumble, and I watched her give me chance after chance. I haven’t experienced love again like I did back then. This album is in my top 3, and I get a bittersweet joy from listening. It takes me back there. We always did it again until we didn’t do it any more.

On John Mayer’s “Something’s Missing”:

John Mayer is easily one of my favorite songwriters. I feel like something is always missing from my life no matter what I have. Especially people. Its a heavy feeling thinking you made yourself so private that no one wants to be near you. He says, ‘How come everything I think I need always comes with batteries’. He’s admitting to his addiction to business, the internet and emails and everything that distracts us from love. Brilliant perspective.

Sit back and mellow out to a few of his favorites below. Also, be sure to revisit “Roll Back, Play That” playlists from Anthony Hamilton, Solange, ScHoolboy Q, and more.
